The April 4 Issue of Coffee Talk discussed the Experience Based Economy. In brief, as it pertains to our industry, your customers want to bring home memories. They want new and unique experiences from their vacations. It’s your job to provide that.
One of the largest growing, experience based tourism niches here in California is agro-tourism. Agricultural tourism is a commercial enterprise at a working farm, ranch or agricultural plant conducted for the enjoyment or education of visitors, and that generates supplemental income for the owner. Agritourism can include farm stands or shops, U-pick, farm stays, tours, on-farm classes, fairs, festivals, pumpkin patches, Christmas tree farms, winery weddings, orchard dinners, youth camps, barn dances, hunting or fishing, guest ranches and more.
Travelers have become more interested in how their food is produced. They want to meet farmers and processors and talk with them about what goes into food production. For many people who visit farms, especially children, the visit marks the first time they see the source of their food, be it a dairy cow, an ear of corn growing in a field, or an apple they can pick right off a tree.
