When Lake Compounce, the nation’s oldest amusement park and home to a celebrated wooden roller coaster, opens its gates Saturday (May 10), it’s clear that summer is drawing near, the Bristol (Conn.) Press reported.

The park, a summertime staple since 1846, has some new attractions on the way, but they won’t be immediately available.

Come July, the park will open Bear Creek Campground, with space for tents and recreational vehicles as well as prefabricated one- and two-bedroom cabins that include everything from cable television to microwave ovens.

Despite the technology, which even includes wireless Internet, the campground is designed to have a rustic appearance, with washtub and mason jar light fixtures at its general store.

The campground is on the south side of the access road, about three-quarters of a mile from the park on the former Norton property.
