Sallisaw, Okla., city commissioners took the recommendation of the city planning commission and denied a request on Monday (March 12) to rezone land on East Cherokee Street for an RV park.
Property owner Gerald Hunter had asked for the rezoning and attended the meeting with his attorney and a real estate agent, both of whom said the RV park would not cause adjoining property to lose value, the Sequoyah County Times reported.
They were met at the meeting by a crowd of residents from Green Acre Village, which adjoins Hunter’s property on the east. The residents said they feared not only loss of property value but also that RV park visitors would trash the neighborhood.
Jeffery Jones of Stilwell, Hunter’s attorney, said RV owners are responsible people and the RV park would have all city utilities, including trash pick up.
Jones and Hunter said the property is in the flood plain and, in order to meet building regulations and codes, would have to have fill at a cost of $250,000 to rise above the flood plain. They said the only viable use of the property is as an RV park.
But the five-man commission voted against the rezoning. The city planning commission also turned down the rezoning request last month.
In an unrelated development, plans for an RV park in nearby Fort Gibson will likely be scratched because the park would have gone in near a burial ground for Native Americans.
