With a long stretch of Interstate 95 in Jasper County, Georgia, travelers often seek a location to either rest, take a walk or dine, and one family business is offering exactly that, the Savannah Morning News reported.

The Point South/Yemassee Kampgrounds of America (KOA) campground off Exit 33 in Yemassee has been in the Olendorf family for 32 years, attracting many RV travelers, campers and quick-stop guests from I-95.

But the campground is not just another stop along the way to a traveler’s final destination. Because of the family’s hospitable reputation, it’s become a home away from home for some.

“The best thing about being a campground owner is the people you meet,” said Jennifer Olendorf Mason, daughter to campground owners Bill and Barbara Olendorf. “Between the staff, the families, repeat guests and people that come to the store, we’ve made a lot of friends.”

As a campground visitor for the third time within the last year, George Pappafotis of Jacksonville, Fla. said it’s the nicest place he’s ever visited.

“The first reason I come back here is because what makes it best is the people and second is for Bill’s coffee,” Pappafotis said last week while waiting for a cup of coffee in the Swimming Mermaid Coffee House and Wine Bar.

Mason was in high school when her father decided to leave the cold weather and advertisement business behind in Chicago to open the Jasper County campground in 1983.

“He just got tired of the rat race and he wanted to work for himself. He decided this was a great family environment to be involved with and meet a lot of great people,” Mason said.

The couple became aware of the Kampgrounds of America Inc. while visiting Austin, Texas in their RV, according to Barbara.

“We saw a KOA for sale sign and he said let’s retire and do it,” Barbara said. “We considered another location, but we just fell in love with this tropical weather, history and the people.”

Bill and Barbara commend their daughter for reenergizing the campground they bought more than 30 years ago, which was recently recognized as the 2016 Campground of the Year by Kampgrounds of America Inc.
