Last year members of the British Columbia Lodging and Campgrounds Association (BCLCA) debated climate change. This year, they are taking action.
Chris Bower, general manager of Nk’Mip Campground and RV Park, Osoyoos, B.C., and recently re-elected BCLCA president, told members at their 65th annual meeting at the Pan Pacific Hotel in Vancouver on Nov. 23 that the association is very supportive of the newly formed BC Partnership for Sustainable Tourism.
“I am extremely pleased the members have ratified a policy to strive to reduce carbon emissions 33% by 2012 using 2009 as the benchmark year,” he stated in a news release.
He explained, “Small accommodation businesses need to play a role and contribute to a comprehensive, province-wide green tourism strategy for sustainability. The first step is to provide understandable plus credible, carbon calculators to our members so that they can measure their impact in 2009; this will be followed up by providing practical carbon emission strategies and best practices to be used by the members to reach the goal of reducing emissions by 33% or hopefully more.
“BCLCA with the BC Partnership for Sustainable Tourism’s help needs to set up a system for tracking and reporting sustainable tourism indicators to measure compliance as we collectively meet the goal.”
Bower added, “At NK’Mip we are in the process of purchasing an electric truck that will greatly reduce the carbon emissions in our maintenance department. We are also looking at electric shuttles to transport customers within the resort. It is important to us to be committed in reducing our carbon footprint in the Osoyoos area.”
