California State Parks has announced the temporary closing of some of the beaches and campgrounds along the Sonoma Coast, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.

Closures will start Wednesday (Dec. 1) and run through June 30.

The most severe cut is to the Bodega Dunes Campground.

Only 20 of its 98 campsites will be available until July 1, 2011.

Very early reservations will be necessary for this popular campground.

Willow Creek and Pomo Canyon campgrounds have already been closed due to weather conditions.

As of this time, Wright’s Beach Campground will remain open.

“Service reductions” due to budget shortfalls was the reason given for the seven-month closing of the above campgrounds, as well as the following:

  • Campbell Cove, Bodega Head (east section), Bodega Dunes, South Salmon Creek Beach, Goat Rock and Blind Beach, Russian Gulch, and the Vista Point Day Use area above Russian Gulch on Highway One.
  • Parking lots and restrooms will be closed at all of these sites.
  • The Bodega Head (west) parking lot and restrooms will remain open. This is the viewing area for whales and birds.
  • Also, Goat Rock Beach (north) will remain open with access to the Russian River mouth and harbor seal watching, etc.
