Champion surfers Cole and Cam Richards recently visited with campers and aspiring surfers at the “surf camp” held each summer at Ocean Lakes Family Campground in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Hundreds of Ocean Lakes’ guests, ages 10-16, have participated in the camp since it was started in the summer of 2004.
“Ocean Lakes has an extensive activity calendar with something for all ages, but we have been focusing on creating activities that would appeal to the young teens. They can be a tough crowd to please,” explained Craig Culbreth, Ocean Lakes’ recreation director and an avid surfer himself. “We have nearly a mile of Atlantic Ocean front, so surfing is natural.”
The surf camp is held in partnership with Billabong, a leading manufacturer of surf accessories. There are about a dozen Billabong Surf Camps on the East Coast and less than 50 in the world.
Ocean Lakes has 893 sites for transient campers and is a three-time National Park of the Year.
