Campers at Clearfork Campground in Mansfield, Ohio, could see their rates more than double to help the city afford to continue operating the site.

The Mansfield News reported that council members discussed the proposed legislation to up the rates during a parks committee meeting Monday night.

“We’ve been operating the campgrounds for several years in the red, and we cannot continue to operate in the red,” said Parks Committee Chairman Jeff Rock.

Mayor Tim Theaker, who said a majority of council members were in favor of rate increases, presented several possible rate changes.

“We have to do something because we cannot continue to lose money or to spend taxpayers’ money to offset this,” he said.

Campers currently pay $1,250 annually in total rent for a camper, dock and winter storage, a rate set in 2006. The proposed new total rate council is currently considering would be $2,750.

Seasonal rates from April to Nov. 1, which includes water but not electric, would more than double from $1,000 to $2,200.
