A day of intense labor by the employees of the Springerville Ranger District and the campground concessionaire Recreation Resource Management of America Inc. has helped to make the Rainbow Campground a safer and neater place, the White Mountain Independent of Show Low, Ariz., reported.
Major logging operations that removed dead and dying trees that presented a safety hazard to the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests’ visitors and employees in the Big Lake Recreation Area were recently completed. This procedure left the Rainbow Campground littered with logs and woody debris, making it unsafe for campers and a fire hazard for the forest.
Springerville Ranger District crews piled slash and logs for the Recreation Resource crews to remove with loaders and trucks. The district crews also raked the campsites and swept the pads to help prepare the campground for opening on May 1. Smaller operations to remove hazard trees will occur throughout the year.
