The Jackson County Board of Commissioners in Jackson, Mich., on Friday (March 26) unanimously approved a grant application intended to help fund improvements at Swains Lake County Park and Campground near Concord, Mich., according to the Jackson Citizen Patriot. They now must wait until the end of the year to know whether their request is approved

The $168,750 grant through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund would cover about 75% of the $225,000 project to replace restroom facilities at the park.

The remainder of the cost is planned to be covered by donations, local foundations and county government dollars.

Officials say the 30-year-old restroom facility does not meet standards for universal accessibility, such has having enough space for wheelchairs to turn around, and its fixtures have exceeded their lifespan.

The 25-acre park has 56 campsites with water and electricity, play structures, a boat launch, picnic and swimming areas.

Officials expect to hear in December if the project was awarded the grant.
