Editor’s Note: The following editorial appeared in The Aegis, the newspaper in Bel Air, Md., and concerns plans for an RV park in Aumar Village, a commercial shopping center under development in nearby Fallston.

It’s just crazy enough to work.

It’s not the first thing to come to mind when considering things that might end up being built at the intersection of Routes 1 and 152 in Fallston. Indeed, it might be one of the last.

Mike Euler, developer of the burgeoning Aumar Village shopping center at the Fallston intersection is proposing, of all things, a campground geared toward recreational vehicles.

“In today’s new economic world, people are using their boats and RVs as a second home,” Euler pointed out when asked about the plan.

While the term campground is evocative of the great outdoors, getting away from it all and the chirps of birds and crickets, there are other reasons people travel, and urban destinations have plenty of appeal. What most urban destinations are lacking, though, is facilities for people who have invested substantial sums of retirement savings in lavish recreational vehicles.

An RV campground at a busy Fallston intersection is hardly a jumping off point for someone looking for outdoor adventure, but it could well be a base camp for launching day trips to attractions in Baltimore or even Philadelphia or Washington, D.C. As many an RV seen on the highway has a small car in tow, it’s a fairly realistic scenario, and one that has a lot of appeal for someone who’d rather not stay in a hotel.

And for those who might end up staying in a Fallston crossroads campground, there are some nearby natural attractions to include the Chesapeake Bay as well as Rocks, Gunpowder and Susquehanna state parks.

Euler might be on to something.
