La Pine, Ore., firefighters were called to Whispering Pines RV Park Sunday (April 24) after a young family escaped a fifth-wheel on fire, mycentraloregon.com reported.

Investigators said Lisa Choate and her three kids, ages 6 months to 12 years, were asleep in the RV when the oldest daughter awoke to smoke. She notified her mother, and the family escaped. La Pine crews responded with just a few minutes, but the fire destroyed the RV and all of the Choates’ personal belongings.

Investigators said the family is very lucky, since there was not a working smoke detector in the RV at the time.

The Central Oregon American Red Cross has provided some temporary assistance and the La Pine firefighters have raised over $400 to help this young family get back on their feet with baby supplies, food, medicine and clothing. Choate is a full-time college student and also has a full-time job. If you are interested in helping the Choates, please contact the American Red Cross.
