b'EDITORS NOTES By Ben QuiggleWhat is on Sectors Horizon for 2021?The global pandemic has certainly been top-of-mind for parkoperators in 2020, just as it has for the rest of North America. In fact, veteran park owners are telling Woodalls CampgroundManagement(WCM) that they cant remember a phenomenon thathas impacted the market for better or for worse the way this viraloutbreak has. In the process, some important issues that might have been toppriorities this year have instead been relegated to the back burner at least in the presslike Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)compliance, property tax assessments and a spate of lawsuits in-volving some parks in New York, Pennsylvania and other states re-lated to websites and ADA compliance. And, of course, Mother Nature also continues to play a key role in the RV park and camp-ground arena. Hurricane Laura in late August steamrolled parts of Louisiana and Texas asone of the largest hurricanes to ever hit the U.S. In the storms aftermath, some RV parkswere damaged, but by and large, from what were told, the bulk of them were able to openup sites to evacuees.Adding to this wild and crazy year is a historic wave of wildfires in Oregon, Washingtonand California amid hot and windy conditions. In early September as WCMwent to press asa matter of fact, California firefighters were battling more than 30 wildfires, the Camp Fireblaze having exploded into one of the largest wildfires in California historyburning morethan 160,000 acres in a week. In early September, it was still completely uncontained.Oregon Gov. Kate Brown had declared a state of emergency after fires burned throughtwo communities and left residents throughout the state to deal with thick, smoky air.All in all, as weve said before, it reads like a science fiction script.Yet, from what were hearing, park owners mostly have remained resilient along with therest of the outdoor hospitality sector, with many park owners reporting robust traffic and in-creased public interest in camping and outdoor activities in general. The Outdoor Recreation Roundtablecontinues to tout the message of how well the out-door hospitality arena has rebounded amid these ongoing crises, but also points out that formany small-business owners the recovery is still under way.As the RV park and campground sector moves into the latter part of the season up north, questions emerge about what 2021 may bring, what snowbirds will do and whether the cur-rent surge in interest will continue. But what 2020 has taught us is that park operators are aresilient bunch. Be it fires, flooding or a virus, owners are still putting out the open signsand campers are still coming in. Whatever 2021 holds, we are sure that the outdoor hospitality sector will rise to the occasion.
