b'EDITORS NOTES By Ben QuiggleIs There Really a Lack of Sites?Consider, for a moment, the number 53,000.Thats how many new private campground sites are tentativelybeing added in 2021, according to the National Association of RVParks and Campgrounds(ARVC) 2020 Industry Trends and InsightsReport. The report, an annual survey of hundreds of park owners/operators,aims to give individuals working in the outdoor hospitality sector aglimpse at what is impacting their businesses. You can read more onthe report beginning on page 3.By the way, the 53,000 new sites are in addition to an estimated50,000 added in 2019Still, theres a general sense in some corners of the market and themedia that the RV park and campground sector is dramatically lacking capacityperhaps becauseof the flood of new RVers who have entered the marketplace due to the COVIDcrisis as well as thefact that people often seem to be looking for adventures these days in altogether new places.Should campers expect some difficulty in reserving sites around popular destinations? Yes.kBut that also gives travelers a chance to get off the beaten path and explore other travel-worthydestinationssomething we noticed last year, with smaller, less traveled state and national parksseeing increases in visitor numbers. For his part, Paul Bambei, CEO and president of ARVC, says its difficult to say the RV park andcampground sector isnt doing enough when they are set to add 100,000 sites in two years. Wethink there are approximately three quarters of a million sites out there represented through ourmembership alone, he said. So, 53,000 is 7% to 8% of that base. I mean, thats pretty good growth.I dont think anybody can complain that were not growing.Meanwhile, the industry is seeing a flood of interest from development groups and individuals, among others, looking to open up new resorts and expand existing ones.In fact, Woodalls Campground Managementposts stories almost daily about developmentsor expansions that are impacting the RV park and campground sectors. So, how does the sector move past this notion that there arent enough sites?Perhaps one way is to help direct campers to some of the lesser-known destinationsthe pathless traveled, so to speak. And we can all look forward to future growth for the RV park and camp-ground sector as natural expansion trends dont seem to be cooling off. While there may be some disappointed RVers who are having trouble finding sites during peaktimes of the year, there are a ton more who are having the time of their lives exploring the beautyof North America. As long as the campground sector continues to grow and offer new opportuni-ties for individuals to explore the great outdoors, one would think murmurs about the lack of sitesshould begin to subside.
