b'EDITORS NOTES BY BEN QUIGGLEA Lot to Be Thankful for This Holiday Here in northern Indiana, where G&G Media, the publisher of Woodalls Campground Magazine (WCM) is based, the holidays are in full swing. It is hard to believe that another year has passed, and we are staring down 2022. Where did the time go?For northern-tier owners who have now closed their parks for the year, I am sure many are looking forward to enjoying time with family while taking a break from the bustle of camping season. For southern-tier owners who are open all year, snowbirds are start-ing to pour in, and they are facing a very busy winter. Many told WCM at conferences this fall that their parks are filled and that if they had more space, they could have filled that, too. After a year of numerous challengesemployment, supply chain, an influx of new campers, park upgrades or new development permitting (always a scary process)most park owners are coming out of 2021 reporting increased revenue and are looking forward to what could be an even brighter 2022.The outdoor hospitality industry has a lot to be thankful for. The RV Industry Association (RVIA) reported that October shipment numbers57,971surpassed any month on record. Remember, some of this data goes back 30 or 40 years. The RVIA also has reported that 72 million Americans are planning to go RVing over the next year. That is up from 61 million a year ago. The Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) recently released new numbers that show the outdoor recreation industry in 2020 generated $688 billion in economic output, com-prised 3% of U.S. employees and accounted for 4.3 million jobs. These numbers are fueling a broader advocacy approach that is driving more money into the National Park System and giving the Outdoor Recreation Roundtable, which includes the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds and RVIA, among other organizations, the ability to make key officials pay attention as it advocates for policies at the national level, including the recently introduced Outdoor Recreation Act.All of this to say that as we approach a new year and look forward to celebrating the holidays, we can all admit that while 2021 had its challenges, most park owners and sup-pliers weathered the storm and are prepared to tackle even more challenges in 2022.Looking ahead, park owners are going to have to take a look at electric vehicles and the continued surge of remote workers as they key in on the demands of todays campers. But with a record amount of investment in 2021 and probably another record-breaking year coming in 2022, the outdoor hospitality industry is poised to reach new heights. While challenges exist, the industry has never been in a better position to meet them and that is something to be very thankful for. Happy holidays!
