Kampgrounds of America Inc. (KOA) plans to open its first campground in Ventura County, Calif., when a locally owned franchisee takes over the RV campground at county-owned Steckel Park, just north of Santa Paula.
Ventura Ranch Resort, the KOA franchise, has reached an agreement with the county of Ventura to take over the RV campground from the current operator, Far West Resorts. The county owns Steckel Park and operates a campground on part of the property, while leasing another portion of it to Far West, according to the Ventura County Star.
Under the new management, the park would be called “Ventura Ranch KOA at Steckel Park.”
The proposed lease still is subject to approval by the county board of supervisors, which will take up the matter at its meeting on Tuesday. It will require the approval of four of the five supervisors.
The KOA franchise would take over for the remainder of Far West’s lease, which runs until 2024. It would then be eligible for a 15-year extension and, later, two 10-year extensions.
Ventura Ranch KOA has promised to spend at least $1.5 million on improvements to the park. The company will also pay rent to the county based on a share of its revenues, with an annual minimum of $45,000.
