Pair North America’s No. 1 camping company with one of the world’s favorite candies, and you just know you’re going to have a good time.

That certainly was the case the weekend of April 3-5 at the Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay, California KOA Campground for the first-ever Great Jelly Belly Easter Weekend, according to a news release.

“We’ve never done anything quite like this before,” said Stephanie Scott, event marketing manager for Jelly Belly. “It was an absolutely wonderful event. The enthusiasm from the campground staff and the campers was tremendous.”

Kampgrounds of America Inc. (KOA) and Jelly Belly scheduled two events to test camper reaction to an event featuring various fun activities using the iconic candy. The second event is planned for Mother’s Day Weekend May 7-9 at the Stockton/Delta, California KOA Campground.

At the Santa Cruz event, Jelly Belly jelly beans were used throughout the weekend to top ice cream sundaes, play bingo and were even the focal point of a Jelly Belly Easter Egg Hunt.

But the main event was a Jelly Belly cupcake decorating event that drew a standing-room-only crowd of more than 100 campers.

“It was wonderful to watch kids, parents and grandparents all laughing as they created their own special cupcake designs,” said Scott. “Just watching everyone enjoy that kind of quality time was special. I think it’s what KOA camping and Jelly Belly are all about.”

Santa Cruz/Monterey Bay KOA Manager Linda Evans agreed. “The camper feedback was terrific. Jelly Belly was a smash hit. We created lasting memories for our guests. It was the perfect family activity,” she said.

“We’re already working on ways to make our next event at the Stockton/Delta KOA even better,” Scott said. “I think we’re onto something here.”
