County officials have released the identify of a man who died today (July 26) in an early morning fire near Monticello in northern Indiana.
George Foulks, 65, of Monticello was found by firefighters in a second-floor bedroom of a concrete building at the Big Monon Camp, 4816 N. West Shafer Drive.
Paramedics tried to resuscitate Foulks at the scene, but he was later pronounced dead at a White County hospital, said Capt. Robert Hickman of the Monticello Fire Department.
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, said White County Coroner Matt Westerhouse.
Firefighters were called to the park at 3:17 this morning to find smoke billowing from the structure. The building, used for storage on the first floor and living on the second floor, was searched twice, and no other occupants were found.
“It was a relatively small but very stubborn fire,” Hickman said.
The blaze was under control by 3:55 a.m. Twenty-seven firefighters from Monticello, Idaville, Reynolds, Buffalo and Monon fire departments worked on the scene.
Foulks was taken to IU Health White Memorial Hospital. He was pronounced dead in the emergency room.
Foulks was living in the building but did not own it. Martin Parish is the owner of Big Monon Camp, Hickman said.
The investigation into the fire has been turned over to the Indiana state fire marshal.
