More than 40 people representing 14 campgrounds and four associate memberships attended the Maryland Association of Campgrounds (MAC) Spring Meeting Tuesday (Feb. 24) at Cherry Hill Park in College Park, Md.
“It was a great meeting – just the shot in the arm that we need to head into another camping season,” Deb Carter, MAC executive director, told Woodall’s Campground Management.
Attendees heard presentations from:

  • Nita Settina, Maryland state park superintendent, on the recently instituted Park Quest Adventure Challenge, an interactive game at some Maryland parks to encourage children to be more involved with nature in an attempt to decrease their “nature deficit disorder.”
  • Cheryl Smith, education director for the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC), with an update on what’s happening at ARVC.
  • Campground owner Ron Vitkun, Yogi Bear Jellystone Park in Williamsport, Md., on the new federal swimming pool regulations.
  • Joe Murray, First Financial, on the state of the economy, the economic stimulus package and how it affects the campground business.
    According to Carter, MAC members discussed these additional matters:

  • Addition of a “clickable” brochure on the MAC website, as well as new mapping features, both to be done through Peter Pelland of Pelland Advertising
  • The bills that have been introduced in the Maryland legislature that will make it harder to run a small business.
  • “Tips on increasing business in campgrounds, including marketing to business clients – a segment of the market that many of campgrounds have not tapped – but one that still has to travel to survive; the possibility of ‘loyalty programs’ at campgrounds; stressing that our customers don’t want to be ‘nickeled and dimed’ to death.”
  • The Timonium RV show held on two weekends in February had very good attendance again this year, Carter said. MAC gave out over 4,000 MAC brochures, as well as info for the Maryland Office of Tourism Development.
