The Higgins Lake, Mich., KOA this year will become the first in the Kampgrounds of America chain to formally offer yurts to its guests.
Owner Wynn Taylor is taking delivery of three yurts from Pacific Yurts in April and will have them ready when the park opens May 1.
Taylor, who converted the campground to the KOA system last year, was considering yurts even before she purchased the 106-site facility, she told Woodall’s Campground Management.
The Pacific Yurt is a circular structure that consists of a durable fabric cover, tension band and a wood frame that includes a lattice wall, radial rafters, central compression ring and a framed door.
The yurts Taylor receives will be 20 feet in diameter and are fully equipped with kitchen, bathroom and accommodations for up to eight people. Nightly rentals will range from $89 to $109.
“I’ve been collecting the materials to have one themed as a Pirates’ Lair and hope to have it ready when the yurts are done. In time I will have a different theme in each one,” Taylor said.
“To the best of my knowledge, those are the first yurts that will be actively marketed in the KOA system,” said Mike Gast, KOA’s vice president of communications.
“Up until this year, we didn’t allow KOA owners who may have had yurts to market them through KOA. So, there might be one or two out there, ‘lying in the weeds’ that I don’t know about,” he added.
KOA does plan to install some yurts at its company-operated campground in Bar Harbor, Maine, Gast noted.
Taylor also is adding two lodges to her resort this year.
The Higgins Lake KOA is approximately 30 years old and is located in the north central part of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, about 40 miles east of Traverse City.
