The city council in Grand Island, Neb., is open to the idea of campgrounds along some of its city’s streets, but council members let it be known Tuesday night (Jan. 27) that any proposal would be highly scrutinized.
The council gave 8-2 final approval to a zoning change that will allow campgrounds by conditional use permit, according to the Grand Island Independent.
The city has already specified that the campground owner would have to submit a plan for where the camper pads would be placed, where utilities, water and interior streets are located as well as where landscaping would be placed. A permanently plumbed bathroom – one for men and one for women – is required, plus an additional bathroom for each 15 camper pads, said Regional Planning Director Chad Nabity.
Additional stipulations could be outlined in the conditional use permit. They could be requirements about loose garbage or annual inspections.
The change in zoning was made at the request of Rick Milton, who wants to construct a campground on land immediately north of his Rodeway Inn in the southeast part of the city, although he hasn’t yet applied to do so.
“He doesn’t want an eyesore,” said Councilman Kirk Ramsey, who reviewed plans with Milton.
Milton said Grand Island lacks camping space, particularly for those arriving at 10 or 11 p.m. He thinks the spaces would be advantageous for horsemen at Fonner Park Race Track and Nebraska State Fair attendees.
