The new owners of Leisure Lake Family Campground in Sumner, Mich., are enjoying their success.

They have taken on what appears to be a booming business, the Morning Sun, Mount Pleasant, reported.

“We have 82 names on our seasonal wait list,” said Raedene Shunk, who, along with her husband Ken purchased the resort May 1. “That’s for people who want to stay all summer. “

Offering 140 campsites, the campground has a 36-acre “no wake” lake with fishing, a jumping pillow, a miniature golf course, paddle boat rentals, a movie on the weekend, playground areas, two picnic pavilions and three cabins to name only a few of the attractions..

Their customers come from all over the state and country and some from just down the road. And many of them come back year after year.

“We are a kid friendly place and (for those that live nearby) you don’t have to drive that far,” Shunk said.

Weekends are usually full, she added.

Some of the campers bring their pontoons, some don’t. But nearly everyone wants to be on the lake.

It is officially open from May 1 to about Sept. 30, but Shunk said she is hoping to eventually stay open until mid-October.

“We’re also getting ready to build another 40 sites on the south,” she said.

The Shunks, along with their three kids, live in Alma, but they too are campers there.

More and more campers are coming to the resort, which is across the road from Hubscher Park. Most would deem the location far from the hustle and bustle of a city, if not downright out in the middle of nowhere.

“We’re very rural,” Shunk said of the Warner Road spot, just off Washington Road. “Some people don’t even know we’re here.”

Nevertheless, an increasing number of campers seem to find it.

The reason for their success is their friendliness. Campers have told her that they like coming there because they are so friendly it’s like family.

Cost for a spot on the lake for a week, with access to everything, including water, electric and sewer, is $240. Off the lake, the cost is $186.

Leisure Lake is also host to family reunions, company and organization picnics.
