NEW BERN, N.C. – The Craven County (North Carolina) Board of Commissioners during its recent regular meeting approved a new ordinance regarding recreational vehicle parks.
The ordinance was approved 6-0 by the commissioners, excluding Commissioner Jason Jones, who was absent from the meeting on Tuesday.
The Recreational Vehicle Park Ordinance applies to properties with more than one RV on the premises.
Existing parks are grandfathered in and will not have to comply with the ordinance, unless additional spaces are added to the park or if a park discontinues use for up to six months.
The ordinance is intended to improve the county’s health and safety through storm and flood resilience, and prevent nuisance and environmental health violations through the proper disposal of sanitary waste.
Regulations within the ordinance are modeled after the county’s mobile home park ordinance. Planning staff also pulled inspiration for the regulations from surrounding communities for the RV Park ordinance.
The ordinance includes requirements for hard-surfaced interior drives, parking spaces, solid waste disposal methods, quick disconnects, a park office, as well as utilities and amenities.
To create an RV park, which includes more than one RV, applicants will have to follow increased permitting requirements, as well as development and maintenance standards.
