New life at the former home of Big Sandy Campground in Swanton, Ohio, aims to bring all walks of life together to experience the great outdoors, according to WTOL.
Superior Made RV Resort owners Nathan and Alicia Lawson said the longtime Swanton campground is being refurbished to provide a more elevated camping experience.
The couple said that by enhancing numerous options at the grounds, it will help with inclusivity and diversity within the recreational industry.
Alicia Lawson said their partnership with Metroparks Toledo allowed her and her husband to gain ownership of the property and give northwest Ohio something the region has not yet had.
“You don’t really see a lot of Black people camping. I feel like the same can be said of Millennial-age people,” Alicia Lawson said. “So, we want to change that, showcase how all cultures, ages, and demographics can come together and camp.”
Gates open for Superior Made RV Resort on Friday for seasonal campers to set up shop. Alicia Lawson said Nate Lawson will be hosting classes on the “How-tos” of camping for those who need it or just a refresher course.
The Lawsons said the resort’s Grand Opening will happen in June 2026, featuring enhancements like a luxurious swimming pool, exhibition cabins and expanded amenities.
