Dan Berg, owner of Lakecrest Resort, Detroit Lakes, Minn., has been named president of the Minnesota Resort & Campground Association for 2013.
The announcement was made during the organization’s Annual Meeting Oct. 24 at the MRCA Fall Conference at Breezy Point Resort, Breezy Point, DetroitLakes.com reported.
Berg grew up in St. Paul and as a child, always felt a pull to live and work around water.
That desire continued as he participated in Bay Lake Camp in Deerwood, Minn., as both a camper and camp employee as a teenager. His passion for nature grew, and Berg went on to study park management and business at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, while also completing summer internships at private campgrounds.
After graduation, Berg jumped at the opportunity to work for a membership resort company in Norway, Ill., and then in Wisconsin, Virginia, Texas and Michigan. In 1995, Berg and his wife, Sandy, wanted to move back to Minnesota to be closer to family.
To begin looking for a job, Berg’s first call was to the then-named Minnesota Resort Association.
“I decided that to meet all of the important people in the industry, I needed to attend the Fall Conference to see what possibilities were out there,” Berg explained in his speech given to Fall Conference attendees.
He connected with resort owners who suggested buying his own resort. And, in 1998, Berg did just that, purchasing Lakecrest Resort as well as a dock sales business.
Lakecrest Resort is located just two miles from Detroit Lakes and features 17 cabins on 16 acres of land on the north end of Long Lake.
Berg and his wife have three children and he credits his family as the most valuable assets to running the property.
Berg joined the association’s board in 2000 and looks forward to his year as president and sees great momentum in the coming months.
“This organization is made up of you and I working together to achieve goals,” Berg said in his speech. “We have to continue to stand up, be heard and tell our stories.”
During the annual meeting, the other board officials were announced for 2013:
- Bryan Harris – Eagle Nest Lodge, Deer River.
- Jim DeRose— Riverside Resort, Richmond.
- Beth Schupp— Fair Hills Resort, Detroit Lakes.
- Tom Kavanaugh – Kavanaugh’s Sylvan Lake Resort, East Gull Lake.
