The year 2013 is ending on a chilly note for some brave souls on South Carolina’s Grand Strand, the Associated Press reported.

The 13th annual Polar Bear Plunge is being held on Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 31) at the Ocean Lakes Family Campground.

Each year, about 300 participants and several hundred spectators turn out for the event. Those who are brave enough take a dip in the chilly waters of the Atlantic.

The campground asks that each participant in the Polar Bear Plunge donate a nonperishable food item. The food that’s collected goes to local food banks.
