The owners of Hilton Head National, a golf club located in Bluffton, S.C., have submitted plans to Beaufort County for a luxury RV resort adjacent to the course.

The resort would occupy approximately 96 acres of the 300-acre Hilton Head National Property, according to the Bluffton Today.

Hilton Head National has been owned by Scratch Golf LLC since its construction in 1989. Bill Palmer, president of Scratch Golf, said “the luxury RV resort will serve as a family friendly destination that will strive to enhance the viability of the Hilton Head National golf course as well as nearby retailers and restaurants.”

According to a release, Scratch Golf officials said they expect the RV resort will “create a high level experience for RV guests with amenities”.

The owners of Hilton Head National caused a stir locally in 2016 and 2017 due to their proposed rezoning of 279 acres for a redevelopment that would have included a hotel, apartments, homes and a convention center. Projected infrastructure needs included about $12.5 million in improvements.

The proposal was met with substantial blowback from the town of Bluffton and many residents, who had concerns about its density. Council rejected the proposal in May 2017.
