John Horton says great pancakes are all in the wrist. And he should know.
Kampgrounds of America Inc.’s (KOA) most prolific pancake turner recently hit the 2 millionth pancake mark while dishing up camper breakfasts at the Rapid City, S.D., KOA.
“Pancakes are an important part of the camping experience,” Horton said while manning his grill. “It’s a way to get their day off to a great start, and it’s a wonderful way to connect to our guests.”
Horton hit the 1 million pancake mark nearly 12 years ago and has been dishing them up as fast as he can at the Rapid City KOA every since. He keeps an official “pancake tally” in a well-worn notebook.
Horton says he’s starting to “slow down” a bit, but still enjoys helping out his fellow flipper, Denny Johnson, when he can.
But pancakes are only part of Horton’s skill set. He also is the campground’s official cowboy balladeer, playing his guitar and singing songs for campers around the campfire at weekend KOA chuck wagon barbecues.
“I just love the interaction we have with campers while we are cooking their breakfasts and entertaining them,” Horton said. “KOA campers are the best.”
