Year-over-year towable retail registrations grew 6.4% in December, again led by the high-volume travel trailer segment, while sales rolled to a 13.4% increase for 2016.
According to the latest report from Statistical Surveys Inc. (SSI), results by category showed:
- Sales for the travel trailer segment climbed 10.1% for the month and 16.4% year-to-date.
- Fifth-wheel registrations edged up 0.9% in December, while gaining 6.4% for the 12 months.
- Folding camping trailer sales fell 8.8% in December and 2.1% through December.
- Park model RV sales dropped 36.5% in December on relatively low volume but showed a 4.7% increase for the full year.
Thor Industries Inc. was the towable sales leader for the 12 months with 48.1% share of the market, ahead of Forest River Inc. owning a 37% share and Grand Design RV Co. (3.3%).
By segment, Thor was No. 1 in travel trailers for the full year with a 47.9% market share, followed by Forest River (38.5%). Thor led fifth-wheel sales with a 54.7% market share followed by Forest River (29%), and Grand Design (9.2%).
In folding camping trailers, Forest River led the category for the 12 months with a 66.8% market share, followed by Thor (14.3%) and Columbia Northwest/Aliner Inc. (12.1%). According to SSI’s report, Champion Home Builders led the park model segment with a 16.9% market share, followed by Kropf Manufacturing Co. Inc. (15.6%), Fleetwood Homes Inc.(10.9%) and Skyline Corp. (10.4%).
