Tombstone’s enduring connection to the American West continues to shape tourism in southeastern Arizona, where historic landmarks, living-history performances and longstanding community traditions offer travelers an opportunity to experience Western history beyond the walls of a museum, according to a press release.

Known as “The Town Too Tough to Die,” Tombstone preserves much of the character that made the former mining community one of the most recognized destinations associated with the American frontier. Visitors continue to explore historic Allen Street, the O.K. Corral, Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park, the Bird Cage Theatre, Boothill Graveyard and other sites connected to the people and events of the 1880s.

Living-history performers and reenactments are also part of the community’s modern tourism identity. Period clothing, Western storefronts, wooden boardwalks, stagecoach experiences and gunfight reenactments help connect present-day visitors with the stories that have made Tombstone internationally recognizable.

The community’s annual events add another layer to that experience.

Tombstone’s 2026 calendar includes Showdown in Tombstone during Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4 through Sept. 6, followed by the 97th Annual Helldorado Days, scheduled for October 16 through October 18.

Helldorado Days is among Tombstone’s longest-running traditions. The celebration traces its origins to 1929 and traditionally brings reenactment groups, street entertainment, live music, period costumes and a Sunday parade into the historic district.

These events are part of a broader form of cultural tourism in which travelers are seeking destinations where local history, architecture, traditions and community identity remain visible within the visitor experience.

“Tombstone is one of those places where history is not confined to one attraction,” said Stacy Rogers, Marketing Director for Stampede RV Resort. “The historic buildings, local businesses, reenactors, events and people who keep these traditions going all contribute to the experience. Visitors can spend the day walking Allen Street and exploring historic sites and still feel connected to the story of the town after the attractions close.”

Locally based lodging businesses also play a role in supporting the destination as travelers increasingly build overnight and multi-day stays around historic communities and special events.

Stampede RV Resort is located on Allen Street in Tombstone and provides RV accommodations and additional lodging options within walking distance of the historic district. Its location allows the resort to serve travelers using Tombstone as both a destination and a base for exploring southeastern Arizona.

Nearby communities and attractions further connect Tombstone with the region’s mining, ranching, military and frontier history, creating opportunities for longer heritage-focused trips through Cochise County.

For Stampede RV Resort, participation in Tombstone tourism is closely connected to preserving the character that attracts travelers to the community in the first place.

Rather than functioning solely as a place to stay, locally operated accommodations, restaurants, shops, historic attractions and entertainment venues collectively support the visitor economy surrounding Tombstone’s Western heritage.

As the 2026 fall travel season approaches, Tombstone’s combination of nationally recognized history and active community traditions continues to demonstrate how heritage tourism can keep the stories of the American West accessible to new generations of travelers, the release stated.
