The fall shoulder season used to be a slow time of year in Texas, but with the increasing popularity of camping, RV enthusiasts are using campgrounds as the season’s base camps for everything from food and music festivals to sightseeing and simply escaping into the wilderness, according to a press release.

“Camping has never been more popular, and our campgrounds, RV parks and resorts expect to be busier than ever this fall,” said Brian Schaeffer, executive director and CEO of the Texas Association of Campground Owners (TACO), which hosts travel planning websites at TexasCampgrounds.com and TexasCabinRentals.net.

Fall activities across the Lone Star State range from food and music festivals, like the annual Day of the Dead Festival, Oct. 27-29, in San Antonio, the annual Fall Fest in Abilene, Oct. 28, and the Bavarian-themed Wurstfest, Nov. 3-12 in New Braunfels.

Given the heightened interest in camping and RV travel, Schaeffer recommends that consumers book their reservations in advance to ensure they secure the campsites or cabins in the parks of interest to them. Here is a sampling of campgrounds across Texas that can be used as base camps for fall activities or simply serve as a destination for peace and relaxation as summer transitions into fall.

Alamo Fiesta RV Resort in Bourne: Located in the German heritage town of Boerne, this 220-site, pet-friendly park includes mostly pull-through RV sites and rental cabins. The park can be used as a convenient base camp for trips into San Antonio as well as the Texas Hill Country. Amenities include a playground, exercise equipment and a park store.

Aviator RV Park in Abilene: Abilene’s newest RV park was designed to provide a clean, comfortable and safe place for short and long-term guests, including military personnel at neighboring Dyess Air Force Base. Dyess houses the B1 Bomber and the C-130 cargo plane and is the future home of the new B-21 Raider Bomber. Park amenities include large, full-hookup, pull-through RV sites, a covered pavilion with picnic tables, as well as a dog park and playground.

Fort Amarillo RV Park in Amarillo: This park is often used as a base camp for excursions to Palo Duro Canyon State Park, which features a rugged 800-foot deep, 110-mile long chasm that is the largest canyon in the U.S. after the Grand Canyon. Fort Amarillo RV Park also accommodates travelers bound for the annual Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, which takes place during the first week of October, as well as people interested in seeing Amarillo-area rodeos. Fort Amarillo RV Park has many amenities, including a 4,500-square-foot dog park, tennis courts, an indoor heated swimming pool, and a unique gift store called Lizzie Mae’s Mercantile, which features everything from Texas-themed souvenirs to Christmas ornaments, unique baking mixes and condiments, and home decor items.

Built on a site with large, majestic oak trees just a few steps from Joe Pool Lake, Loyd Park Lodge features a fully-furnished kitchen, a covered porch with rocking chairs, a barbecue grill, a fire pit, big screen TVs and Wi-Fi.

The campground, which has access to nature trails, has 116 spacious RV sites, many of which are shaded by mature pecan trees. Premium sites feature gas barbecue grills. Amenities include an indoor swimming pool and hot tub, Jacuzzi tubs, two off-leash dog parks, a children’s playground and a children’s library area.
