She is making the best of things after the worst moment of her life.

“Dec. 28 shouldn’t have happened, but here we are,” said Margie Grube.

ABC 13 reported that Dec. 28, 2016, was the day that Grube lost her husband Devon, a Navy SEAL, after a kayaking accident near Cape Charles, Va.

She and their three children, Wyatt, Harper, and Hazel, have been trying to come to terms with the reality since then. She is working to cope with the heartbreak by honoring her late husband and giving back.

Grube organized a fundraiser in his name that started as nothing more than a backyard cookout. During the course of several months, it grew into a weekend-long event at the KOA campground called the Devon Grube Memorial BBQ Classic. Tens of thousands of dollars were raised for the Navy SEAL Foundation and Operation Once in a Lifetime, organizations that Grube said “financially and morally supported us through a terrible time.”

Friends and community members rallied around Grube to help pull off the event. Kenny Letner assisted her in organizing the weekend.
