A proposal to construct a campground in the Rocky Mount area was recommended for denial by the Franklin County (Va.) Planning Commission on Tuesday (Oct. 10), following significant pushback from neighbors, according to The Franklin News-Post.
The Franklin County Board of Supervisors will make a final vote on the project during its monthly meeting on Nov. 14.
The boardroom was nearly filled with opponents of the proposal to construct a mixture of RV lots, primitive sites and cabins on 20 acres located on Southside Drive in Rocky Mount. Nearly a dozen spoke during the meeting’s public comment period, all against the project.
“We have major concerns,” said Brad Byrd, a neighbor of the property. “We don’t want this in our neighborhood.”
Byrd, like many who spoke, was concerned about the increased traffic and the type of individuals who might possibly stay at the campground in close proximity to multiple homes. Others wondered why people would want to stay at a campground located so close to U.S. 220 which runs parallel to Southside Drive.
