Mirroring RV sales nationwide, RV dealers in the Richmond, Va., area have seen a bump in business this year.
According to an Associated Press report, McGeorge’s Rolling Hills RV off Interstate 95 in Hanover County is the Richmond area’s biggest RV dealership and one of the biggest in the country, with more than 500 RVs of all kinds on its lot.
Edward L. McGeorge, who owns the business along with his two sons, said the average annual sales increase since 2009 has been 32%. “We’ve been as high as 40% and had years when it’s been 20-something percent,” he said.
Cheek & Shockley RVs at 2600 Mechanicsville Turnpike in eastern Henrico County has an inventory of up to 75, all towable units, on the lot, owner Frank Shockley said.
“When the economy tanked in 2008-09, business dropped 50%,” he said. “We’ve recovered about 25 percent.”
McGeorge was at the industry trade show in Louisville, Ky., which gave manufacturers a chance to showcase their newest models to dealers looking to place orders for the coming year.
“Dealers were very upbeat,” he said, with good prospects for all kinds of RVs — from diesel-powered luxury motor homes to towable tent campers.
Shockley said the biggest comeback he has seen at his dealership is the demand for travel trailers that sell for less than $25,000.
