Former YMCA Camp Redevelopment Sparks RV Park Dispute

A lakeside property (in Alabama) that operated as a YMCA camp for seven decades is now at the center of a dispute between a new owner and neighboring residents who say a proposed RV park raises serious safety concerns, according to WAFF.

The owner of the 62-acre property plans to convert it into an RV park. Neighbor Brad Fleming said he learned of the plan after receiving a notice in the mail.

“I thought: wow, that’s a lot of RV’s,” Fleming said.

Camp Cha-La-Kee operated on the property for roughly 70 years as part of the Heart of the Valley YMCA. The camp closed after the YMCA filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2024. A new owner purchased the property in a $2.3 million sale in 2025.

The original deed to the property states the land can only be used for recreational purposes by guests of a private club, making an RV park one of the limited development options available to the new owner.
