Gyorgy Baumann and his wife, Melinda, rely on the Muskegon River (Michigan) for their business, according to WZZM.
“We do have a campground with 92 to 93 sites, and we also run a river business,” said Gyorgy. “We do canoe trips, river trips, kayaks and tubing.”
For a while, that river threatened their plans to open on time.
Over the past week, water flooded the neighborhood leading into Salmon Run Campground, prompting evacuations. But because their house sits on a hill at the campground, they decided to wait it out.
Besides losing a few canoes, the couple says most of their property made it through.
“Some things floated away,” said Gyorgy.
The Baumanns say their camp store and pool were spared. Their seasonal campers and their buses were moved to higher ground, now also safe.
The Baumanns are still planning to open for the 2026 season.
