In the middle of the night, a crane lifted up Traverse City’s (Mich.) 30-ton pedestrian bridge and brought it up and away from the anchor points it has sat in since 1966, according to MLive.com.
The pedestrian bridge crossing over U.S. 31 was removed on Saturday, Sept. 20.
The build-up to the bridge removal has been a lightning rod for both Traverse City and the camping community at large.
The bridge removal is in service of the Keith J Charters Traverse City State Park‘s $8.5 million revamp.
The largest transformation is the campground entrance redesign − a plan that has been discussed as far back as the 1970s as the campground’s popularity has made it one of the most booked in the state.
