The owner of the Mic Mac Cove Family Campground in Union, Maine, said she felt compelled to speak out about wild and false claims about the campground that borders Crawford Pond, according to the Midcoast Villager.

Katharine Lunt said since July 18 she has been silent at the request of the Maine State Police as it conducted the investigation into the July 2 killing of Sunshine “Sunny” Stewart, whose body was found on 100-Acre Island in the middle of Crawford Pond. Police arrested 17-year-old Deven Young of Frankfort on July 16 and he made his initial court appearance July 18.

Lunt said she could no longer be quiet about the “crap” that people have posted on social media. She said at no time did Young act violently at the campground. Some people on social media have claimed they had heard that Young had pulled a knife on someone, had tried to drown someone and had bullied other children.

“That is ridiculous. He never threatened anyone with a knife or a gun or anything,” Lunt said.

Lunt noted that people had posted other claims, suggesting that a New England serial killer was responsible for Stewart’s death. She also pointed out that people suggested Young might be a person who a social media poster claimed had fired a gun in Appleton a couple of weeks ago.

Midcoast Villager contacted the Knox County Sheriff’s Office about the claim of a young person with a gun in Appleton. Sheriff Patrick Polky said there was no call made to police about such an incident, as an anonymous poster claimed.

Lunt said she has no tolerance for any threatening behavior and has kicked people out of the campground for far less than threats.
