Kampgrounds of America, Inc. (KOA) is pleased to welcome the Peter, Susan, Will and Kat Brooke family and the Virginia City KOA Journey to the KOA Family of Campgrounds. With decades of experience working with the KOA brand and deep family ties to Madison County, the new ownership brings both outdoor hospitality knowledge and a personal connection to the region as they invest in a campground that complements one of Montana’s most historic destinations, according to a press release.
Perched on a hill above Virginia City, the Virginia City KOA Journey offers views of the Ruby Mountains, access to nearby public lands and an ideal basecamp for travelers exploring the area’s Old West history. The campground is just minutes from Virginia City and Nevada City, where visitors can experience one of the oldest intact ghost town destinations in the United States, along with preserved historic landmarks, living history attractions and outdoor recreation.
“Our family’s roots run deep in Madison County,” said Peter Brooke, owner of the Virginia City KOA Journey. “Both sides of our family grew up here, and as we looked further into our family history, we found that our families also crossed paths in Virginia City during the height of the gold rush in the late 1860s. They came here hoping to strike gold, and now, six generations later, our family has returned hoping to strike gold with KOA. We’re excited to be part of this community and to create a campground experience that feels connected to the history, character and adventure that make Virginia City so special.”
The Virginia City KOA Journey offers RV sites and tent sites, along with amenities including Wi-Fi, propane, a pavilion, cornhole boards and a nature trail. Guests can also access hundreds of miles of nearby dirt roads and trails for ATV/OHV riding, mountain biking, hiking and backcountry exploration. Nestled against the forest overlooking town, the campground also features spring-fed creeks and easy access to the restored historic ghost towns of Virginia City and Nevada City, making it a distinctive stay for travelers seeking both outdoor adventure and Montana heritage.
Located at 1302 E Warren Street in Virginia City, the Virginia City KOA Journey is open May 1 to Sept. 30.
