The unveiling on Tuesday (Nov. 11) of a sign bearing the name of “Gary McDermott RV Park” signified the rededication of the former Riverview RV Park at 850 Riverview Dr. in Clinton, Iowa, according to the Clinton Herald.
“It’s a tribute not only to what he accomplished but to the spirit of what he believed in,” McDermott’s wife, Cindy, said. “His motto was ‘adapt, modify, and overcome,’ but wouldn’t it be great if we didn’t have to?”
McDermott had grown up camping with his family. Following his service as a U.S. Army crew chief and door gunner on Chinook helicopters during the Vietnam War, McDermott bought a Volkswagen camper, while living and working in New Mexico.
