A special land use application sent the quiet rural community of Ganges Township (Mich.) spiraling in April, as neighbors, government officials and campground owners clashed over a newly proposed campground, according to the Holland Sentinel.
“Ganges Township is currently undergoing (an) RV park land use crisis,” said Planning Commissioner Ed Gregory during a pivotal meeting Aug. 27.
“This issue has turned Ganges Township into a battleground,” said resident Linda Rodriguez during public comment. “It’s a battleground that Michael O’Connor has chosen to pursue. … This needs to come to a resolution and Ganges Township needs to stand up for itself.”
In the end, according to Rodriguez’s definition, that’s exactly what officials did — denying the application 3-2. But the ramifications of that decision could see the municipality and applicants next in a courtroom.
The 25-acre project with a proposed 89 sites from applicant Bobbi Jo Beyersdorf would’ve been a partnership with Michael O’Connor, owner of the adjacent Campit Outdoor Resort. Beyersdorf previously said the campgrounds are unrelated, but also said visitors would be able to purchase day passes to access Campit.
